This Renault 5 TL, first delivered in Spain in April 1978 and showing just 20,917 kilometres, remains in immaculate original condition. The dry Southern European climate has undoubtedly contributed to its remarkable preservation. The beautiful combination of Bleu Crépuscule (472) with the brown striped cloth interior perfectly reflects the typical 1970s character of the car.
We acquired this Renault 5 in 2018 and subsequently sold it, with 16,723 kilometres, to Brussels-based collector Jean Werner. The Renault then became part of his beautiful and exceptionally diverse collection, which was extensively featured by Classic Driver a few years ago. Recently, we were given the opportunity to buy the car back – an offer we gladly accepted.
The bodywork is still entirely in its original factory paint. The quality and finish of Renault paintwork in the 1970s was simply not comparable to that of, for example, German manufacturers of the same period. The characteristic ‘orange peel’ can therefore, at first glance, give the impression that the car has been repainted. This is absolutely not the case; this original paint texture is in fact part of what makes this example so remarkably original. The bodywork and chassis are exceptionally sound and completely rust-free. The only exception is some superficial corrosion around the battery area, caused by battery acid leakage in the past. As usual, our extensive photo album allows you to inspect the car thoroughly from every angle.
We have just carried out a major service, during which the complete braking system was overhauled and the tyres were replaced.
