Dr. Pierre Dupain, a physician and biologist from Montrouge near Paris, ordered this Mercedes-Benz 230 SL on July 22nd, 1964 through Royal-Elysées S.A., then the official Mercedes-Benz importer for France. The car was delivered to him on February 8th, 1965. More than 47 years later, in February 2012, we acquired this Mercedes from its first owner in Paris and shortly afterwards sold it to a Belgian couple. With a current mileage of approximately 99,800 kilometres, just 500 kilometres more than when we sold it in 2012, this Pagoda has now returned to our collection once again.
The documentation accompanying this car is exceptionally extensive. Included are not only the original Bon de Commande (purchase order) and the original sales invoice, but also all original manuals and booklets supplied with the car, including a stamped service booklet. In addition, the file contains various maintenance invoices, inspection reports, delivery documents and the original Mercedes-Benz data card. This is a uniquely unrestored Mercedes-Benz 230 SL that still presents today with the panel fit and shut lines exactly as it left Mercedes-Benz. The original spot welds remain visible throughout.
In 1971, the paintwork was renewed on the exterior only after the bodywork had been scratched by third parties. At that time, a slightly lighter shade was chosen than the original factory colour, 178 Anthrazitgrau Metallic. The inner door jambs and engine compartment were not repainted. The luggage compartment also remains in a highly original condition. Whereas the rubber trunk mat on many Pagodas has hardened over the years and the trunk floor often shows signs of corrosion, both the luggage compartment and the original rubber mat of this car remain in truly exceptional condition. The same can be said for the underside of the car. Parts of the suspension show no noteworthy surface corrosion, while bolts, brackets and other components still retain their original yellow cadmium finish. The light-coloured MB-Tex interior displays a charming patina. The upholstery is free from tears or damage. The dashboard and wood trim are equally well preserved. During the past fourteen years, only the carpet set and the soft top have been renewed.
Apart from a touring rally shortly after its purchase, the Mercedes has seen very little use over the past fourteen years. Prior to delivery, we thoroughly recommissioned the car mechanically. As there were always plans to put the car back into regular use, we brought it out of its heated garage on two further occasions during the years that followed and once again made it fully roadworthy. In the end, however, these plans never materialised and the Mercedes returned to its place in the garage both times.
An unrestored European 230 SL with a fully documented history. Unique. Irreplaceable.
